The Association of women living with HIV and AIDS in Nigeria (ASHWAN) has brought together stakeholders to survey barriers on prevention of mother to Child transmission.
The one day stakeholders validation meeting, held by ASHWAN DELTA at the prof Chike Edozien Secreteriat Asaba, was in collaboration with the Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+).
The ASHWAN National officer, Mrs Helen Akpan noted that the workshop would give room to understand the barriers, prevention of vertical transmission of HIV especially among the hard to reach Women living with HIV in Nigeria.
The National Secretary, Nkem Chukwuemeke in her welcome address noted that all stakeholders should key into the objectives of the workshop by linking their areas of operation, to the prevention of mother to child transmission.
The Executive Secretary, Delta State Action Agency for the Control of HIV and AIDs (DELSACA), Dr Rudolph Hubson acknowledged the importance of the meeting stressing that if mother to child transmission survey and barriers could be brought to the minimum the spread of HIV and AIDS would be reduced
Stakeholders, with HIV and AIDS who spoke said the meeting would create an innovative approach aimed at promoting awareness through capacity building, agenda setting, for advocacy.
The Network of people living with HIV and AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWAN ), State Action Committee on AIDS, (SACA ) Ministry of Justice Directorate sexual offence Unit, were amoungs those who engaged in the study on the barriers preventing the uptake of Antenatal Care (ANC) and Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) in Delta state)
They stated some of the barriers to include stigma, discrimination and violence.
